Being productive on the go can be tough, we know. And as owners of a rapidly growing business, we’re always on the go. So how do you get the most out of your day? Being organized. That may seem like common sense but if you’re not inherently good at getting things sorted, how do you start? Here are a few tips on increasing both productivity and efficiency in your business.

Schedule an action plan the night before

This goes at the top of our list because it’s what will set the tone for all your other good organizational habits. What seems more effective to you – waking up and prioritizing your day as you go, or scheduling your to-dos the night before and waking up ready to go? We believe in the latter. By taking as little as ten minutes every night to plan your day, you take the guesswork out of knowing what needs to get done. Not only that, you minimize the risk of forgetting important tasks. Even if your to-do lists are long, breaking them down daily, focusing on what needs to get done, and prioritizing them accordingly, you’ll stay on top of your day. And don’t think little things like a lunch break or gym time shouldn’t be included. By adding these routines in, you’ll get yourself in a good headspace every day.

One task at a time

For years, everyone touted multitasking as the efficient way to get things done. The reality, though, is it ends up losing you time, making you less productive in the long run. By focusing on one task at a time, you can give each task your full, undivided attention. This means no more checking every email and message notification immediately! Building on that, group all your related tasks together, one after another. When it’s time to check and respond to emails, do them all at once. Allot two or three times in the day where all you do is respond to messages. When you stop answering non-urgent messages on the fly, you’ll see your efficiency skyrocket. And this is the case with all your similar tasks.

Work off-site and when you can’t, use your commute time

In an ideal world, we all live close enough to work that we don’t have to contend with traffic or public transit. If this isn’t your life right now though, work with what you have. Consider working off-site more often. Remote working has become more and more popular in the last few years as companies realize that it can reduce commute times, sick days and allow for shorter lunches. With minimal office interruptions, people find they can focus and concentrate better. However, if going into the office is inevitable, don’t waste that valuable commute time. While it might seem like a good idea to catch up on some sleep, you’d do better to catch up on what’s going on in the office. If that means checking in with staff on what they’re working on and if they need help, or just playing e-mail catch-up, this is a great time to hammer them out. Unless you’re driving. Safety first!

Clean space!

This is a no-brainer. You want to be more organized in your work life? Clean up your desk! Stop wasting time looking for documents or keys and start placing things in their intended spots. Get in the habit of putting your files in a filing cabinet or desk organizer, all your stationary in one drawer, and place your keys in the same place every day. Not only will you know where everything is, your mind will feel at ease when you go to sit down and work. And click here to read our blog about what to do when you lose your keys!

Take regular breaks

Going through the day without a reprieve for yourself will result in a burn-out in no time. It’s important to schedule breaks throughout the day to recharge and rest your brain. We even advocate a power nap once in a while. Drink plenty of water throughout the day and when you block time off for a break, reduce your daily stress level with some laughter. If you’re not having fun, frankly, you’re doing it wrong!
