Work and stress, two words that often go hand-in-hand. Even when you love your job, you’re passionate and driven, stress is often inevitable. It’s impossible for any career to be all sunshine and rainbows so ask yourself this question: can you keep a calm mind when things don’t go your way?
Even the wisest and calmest can lose their cool, we’re all human, after all. But if you’re prone to outbursts, or crack under pressure, these stress-busting tips might save your career — and your life.
Start Your Mornings Off Right
This should be number one on your list if you want to keep calm. A great way to start the day is getting up earlier than you need to. For all you night owls, this might be hard, but getting up earlier has its benefits. For one, you’re not rushing around the house trying to get to work on time. If you’re already frazzled before you even start work, how do you expect to keep calm when things really hit the fan? Relish that extra time in the morning to have a proper breakfast, collect your thoughts, go for a run, or even meditate. Whatever you choose, implementing some kind of morning ritual will foster a calm mind.
Are You Organized?
We can’t stress this one enough, when you get organized, you maximize efficiency and lower stress levels. We cover this in our blog post but let’s give you a refresher. Spend 10 minutes the night before, or the morning of (since you’re getting up earlier), to plan and prioritize your day. Use your long commute wisely (if you’ve got one) to catch up on your emails and check in with your staff. In fact, ditch the phone routine first thing in the morning. There’s nothing better for a calm mind than giving your brain a break from the digital noise. That might seem like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how many people reach for their phone first thing.
Stay Healthy In & Out of the Office
If your body’s in bad shape, you can bet all aspects of your life will suffer, and that includes your work. Start by getting more exercise. Thirty minutes a day will do. This is especially true for those who sit at a desk or vehicle all day, but everyone should pay attention. Exercise is not only good for your physical body, it’s a great way to keep calm. It’s a proven way to increase your endorphins and reduce stress levels in your body. Add in eating healthier (read: nutritious) and getting a full night’s sleep, and nothing’s going to ruffle your feathers.
Don’t Be So Hard on Yourself
You’ve put together your action list for the day but only managed to complete five of seven tasks. That’s ok. It doesn’t do you any good to beat yourself up over incomplete tasks. If you bring the stress and unhappiness of “being behind”, your work will suffer. At the end of the day, the work will get done. On that same note, if you’re rushing to complete your work, it will also suffer. It might sound counter-intuitive but instead of rushing, give your brain a break. Step away from your computer and your phone, and take a 5-10 minute walk and calm your mind. When you’re calm and focused, you can get back to it feeling refreshed.
Play to Your Strengths — With A Good Business Tool
When you step into the office, what’s the first thing you do? If it’s administrative tasks like asset tracking, stop! There’s nothing worse than starting your day chasing after people for papers, keys, or cars. Get yourself a good business tool to manage the small but important duties in your office. They only take 5 minutes, you say, I don’t need a business tool. Well, if your strengths lie in completing slightly mundane tasks, keep at it. However, we doubt that’s true. If you’re good at fostering great working relationships with your clients, it’s a waste of time and money to call Mary from Marketing to find out where the office laptop has gone. This falls under getting organized, too. If you don’t have to worry about where your assets have gone, you’re more likely to keep cool when other problems arise.
And this is Logitout’s mandate. When you work with us, you’re saving time, money, and energy, and focusing on bigger tasks with a clear, keep calm mind. So are you ready to make office life easier for you and your employees?
